The great debate.....Only buy autographs from someone you trust...period.
In the recent years is the great debate over buying autographs.
It seems to me that high end autographs should only be bought from dealer who got them authenticated by one of the authentication companies . I say only buy autographs from someone you trust...period.
Let me go into detail a bit. First of all the authentication companies is just there opinion. "Expert " opinion ? What makes them an expert? Who is to say that there example is the real deal or not?
Back in the day wrestlers did not sit down at tables and sign piles of pictures and items. They stood in the ring maybe place the item on the turnbuckle ( SEE PHOTO ), or in there other hand and and signed it. They signed stuff in bars , restaurants , airports etc. So its almost impossible to match up an item to the "experts example".
Can the authenticators make mistakes based on there examples? Of course they can , it has happened before to me and to thousands of you too. There human aren't they ? They are not the bottom line. But they are making a fortune. And have a stranglehold on the industry.
Lets do an experiment , lets take a lined sheet of paper and sign Your name 25 times , now look at the top one and compare it to the bottom one. Okay you see where I'm coming from on that point.
Now for someone who gets autographs in bulk this applies greatly to matching up the authenticators example to my items.
As we live in an age of anything for money , (that's why there are so many forgeries out there in the first place ). Can I believe that an authenticator cant be bribed to authenticate something for the right price. Of course they can. Again I say only buy autographs from someone you trust...period.
As a person who sells autographs myself I will tell you that I'm not an expert . But I do specialize in the selling of them. Do I have bad autographs in my collection ? I don't think so but its possible. Over my 50 plus years of collecting and now selling autographs I can truly say that most of my autographs I got myself. I used to go to Ag Hall in Allentown Pa., Hamburg Field House in Hamburg Pa. and wrote to the fan clubs and booking agencies , and bought collections from some pretty famous people since the age of nine (1969 ). I'm not saying this to authenticate myself . But as most of you know me , you trust me. If you don't trust me , please don't buy from me. I've never been in this business for the money and don't need it. ( money ). But lets not get stupid here I'm not giving away the farm. I have some primo pieces that in the near future I will be presenting to the public.
So in closing let me say this if your into getting autographs only certified by authenticators great. Do your thing I have no problem with that. But please take my advice only buy autographs from someone you trust...period.
